What is the NGN Stairs Secret?
by Virgil Aponte
Yup that's me doing some stair work at Bushwick High School in Brooklyn, New York. Stairs are all around us and provide an amazing workout tool that's free and super effective. Just look to your school, apartment building, office buiding or local park for a places to do stair work. You will not be disappointed with the results.
Stair exercises fall into a special category for me because they helped me rehabilitate myself after a hernia operation and a serious abdominal pull. Another reason is that there is so much you can you with them. The list of
exercises you can do is so exhaustive that I devoted and entire video series and book to stair exercises. In the book will teach you to develop maximum strength, power, flexibility & conditioning with stair exercises. My first intention when doing the video series and book on stair exercises was to give coaches, PE teachers and athletes in general another conditioning tool they could use to get in condition for sports.
You see I was very successful using stair exercises to condition myself, professional, college and high school athletes. But I was also very successful using stairs with other populations like PE students, seniors, company CEO’s, teachers, police officers, secretaries and just basically anyone that was looking for an alternative way to get a great workout.
I got so many questions from so many different people that I decided to include the Ultimate Stair Exercises in the NGN program. One thing I don’t want you to do is fool yourself and think that it’s a book only for athletes. That is so far from the truth.
Here’s what you can expect from using stair exercises:
Improved leg strength: Athlete or not strengthening your legs will always be a good thing. If want firm beautiful toned legs that are pain free strengthening them with stair exercises will do the job.
Improved Power: Again improved power is beneficial for most anyone. An athlete may use stairs to jump higher but increased power will also help people do other things like being more efficient when people do house work,
play with their children or just about anything that requires leg power.
Improved Flexibility: This goes without saying but most people can benefit from improved flexibility. The static and dynamic flexibility exercises you will learn in the stairs book have helped me tremendously with chronic knee
and hip pain.
Improved balance and coordination: More balance and coordination will usually lead to better athletic performance and reduced risk of injury. This will benefit most anyone.
Aerobic Endurance: Most anyone can benefit from improved aerobic endurance. Just like any other aerobic activity it will help you burn more calories thus helping you lose weight or maintain an ideal bodyweight. I myself initially just walked when I did stair exercises (that’s all I could really do). But I got in amazing aerobic condition. I could walk 60-120 flights of stairs 2-4 times a week.
Anaerobic Conditioning: This is my favorite use of stairs as it’s great for dropping loads of body fat and is very efficient. Workouts can be done in less than 15 minutes. It is actually very similar to hill sprints. I actually prefer stairs to hill sprints. But I’m biased as stairs helped me so much at a point in my life when I was just coming off surgery and a serious abdominal pull. In my opinion you can’t go wrong with either. Just pick which ever one you have available or which ever you like to do.
